Resumo: Tumor markers are macromolecules present in either the tumor itself, the blood, or other biological fluids. Their appearance and/or changes in their concentration are related to cancer cell genesis and growth. This article presents a review of the Brazilian and international literature on the role of tumor markers in clinical  anagement of cancer and their importance as tools in diagnosis, staging, treatment choice, recurrence, and clinical prognosis. Based on the literature review as a whole, declining or stabilized tumor marker levels indicate a favorable response, while those that remain high or increase should be viewed as reflecting recurrent or metastatic disease.

Este trabalho apresenta uma revisão da literatura nacional e internacional sobre o papel dos marcadores tumorais no manejo clínico de pacientes com câncer, desde o auxílio no diagnóstico e estadiamento até a avaliação da resposta terapêutica, detecção de recidivas e prognóstico, além de auxiliar na decisão da terapia a ser utilizada, bem como terapias adjuvantes.
