Children with Cancer in the Process of Dying and their Families: Confrontation of Nursing Team

Resumo: Introduction: To care for children with cancer and their families, the nursing staff must understand the process of dying, because this kind of care is very different and difficult, considering the operational and relational aspects. Objective: Describe the specifics of nursing care for children in the process of dying and their families and analyze the performance of the team towards this child and his family. Method: Qualitative research, carried out in a hospital specializing in Oncology in Rio de Janeiro. The subjects were six members of the nursing staff who participated in the non-directive interview from January to March 2010. The documents were treated using Thematic Analysis. Results: Death is understood as a loss and, sometimes, a relief. The team has difficulty in experiencing the dying process of the child and provides coping strategies, such as not leaving the child to die alone, separating the professional from the emotional, neutralizing feelings and never showing weakness. Conclusion: The nursing staff has difficulties in dealing with the death of a child with terminal cancer and supporting his/her family. These difficulties are related to the lack of understanding of palliative care.

Objetivo: Describir las especificidades de la asistencia en enfermería a los niños en proceso de muerte y su familia y analizar la actuación del equipo en relación a este niño y su familia. Método: Investigación cualitativa, desarrollada en un hospital especializado en Oncología, en Rio de Janeiro. Participaron seis integrantes del equipo de enfermería, que participaron de una entrevista no directiva en grupo entre enero y marzo de 2010. Para el análisis de los documentos fue utilizado el Análisis Temático. Resultados: Se evidencio la muerte es comprendida como una perdida y a veces, como un alivio. El equipo tiene dificultad en vivenciar el proceso de muerte del niño y establecer estrategias para enfrentarla como no dejar el niño morir solo, separar el profesional de lo emocional, neutralizar los sentimientos y nunca demostrar debilidad. Conclusión: El equipo de enfermería presenta dificultades en lidiar con la muerte del niño con cáncer terminal y en apoyar su familia. Objetivo: Descrever as especificidades do cuidado de enfermagem à criança com câncer em processo de morrer e sua família e analisar a atuação da equipe de enfermagem frente à criança com câncer em processo de morrer e sua família. Método: Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, desenvolvida em um hospital especializado em oncologia do município do Rio de Janeiro. Os participantes foram seis integrantes da equipe de enfermagem que participaram da entrevista não diretiva em grupo no período de janeiro a março de 2010. Para analisar os depoimentos, foi utilizada a análise temática. Resultados: Evidenciou-se que a morte é entendida como uma perda e por vezes um alívio. A equipe tem dificuldade em vivenciar o processo de morrer da criança e estabelece estratégias de enfrentamento como não deixar a criança morrer sozinha, separar o profissional do emocional, neutralizar os sentimentos e nunca demonstrar fraqueza. Conclusão: A equipe de enfermagem apresenta dificuldades em lidar com a morte da criança com câncer em processo de morrer e apoiar sua família.
