Coping Strategies among Oncological Patients’ Family Members

Resumo: Introduction: The family is the main source of support to cancer patients and due to the hospitalization experiences stressful situations, before which you can use coping strategies to deal with these conditions. Objective: To identify the coping strategies used by family members of hospitalized cancer patients. Method: Quantitative, descriptive, cross sectional investigation, with 141 hospitalized oncological patients in a health institution in Northeast of Rio Grande do Sul. Data collect instruments were a form with sociodemographic information and Lazarus & Folkman Coping Strategies Inquiry. Analysis was developed through descriptive statistics with software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Project was approved by Ethics Committee with consubstantial feedback number 427-613. Results: Most family caregivers are women, aged between 41 and 70. Most used coping factors were positive reevaluation and social support, and the less used factors were escape and avoidance. Conclusion: To evaluate coping strategies it is important to subsidize the reflections, discussions and actions of health professionals, students and managers, keeping in sight the ways of changing the posture on assistance to family members of cancer patients.

Objetivo: Identificar las estrategias de coping utilizadas por los familiares de pacientes con cáncer hospitalizados. Método: Investigación cuantitativa, descriptiva, y transversal con 141 familiares de pacientes con cáncer hospitalizados en instituciones de salud de Noroeste de Río Grande do Sul. Los instrumentos de recolección de datos fueron Formulario con información sociodemográficas y el Inventario de Estrategias de Coping de Lazarus y Folkman. El análisis fue realizado con estadística descriptiva y software estadístico Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Proyecto aprobado por el Comité de Ética en el consejo encarnado número 427-613. Resultados: La mayoría de los cuidadores familiares son mujeres de 41 a 70 años. Los factores de coping más utilizadas fueron reevaluación positiva y soporte social, y los menos utilizados fueron fuga y esquiva. Conclusión: Evaluar las estrategias de coping es importante para subvencionar reflexiones, discusiones y acciones de los profesionales de la salud, estudiantes y directivos con el fin de cambiar posturas en la asistencia a las familias de los pacientes con cáncer.Introdução: A família é a principal fonte de apoio do paciente oncológico e, face à hospitalização, vivencia situações estressoras, diante das quais pode utilizar estratégias de coping para lidar com essas condições. Objetivo: Identificar as estratégias de coping utilizadas por familiares de pacientes oncológicos hospitalizados. Método: Investigação quantitativa, descritiva, transversal, com 141 familiares de pacientes oncológicos hospitalizados em instituição de saúde do Noroeste do Rio Grande do Sul. Os instrumentos de coleta de dados foram Formulário com informações sociodemográficas e inventário de estratégias de coping de Lazarus e Folkman. Análise realizada com estatística descritiva e software estatístico Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Projeto aprovado por Comitê de Ética sob parecer consubstanciado número 427-613. Resultados: A maioria dos familiares cuidadores é mulher, com idade entre 41 a 70 anos. Os fatores de coping mais utilizados foram reavaliação positiva e suporte social, e o menos, fuga e esquiva.
