In livestock, the creation of calves, especially newborns, requires good handling practices with increased attention to details which can significantly interfere in the final production. Because it is one of the most complex activities of the property, with the occurrence of problems that significantly increase the mortality rate causing great losses to the producer. Thus, the objective of this work is to report the importance of care for newborns within the bovine production system through a literature review. The first phase of a calf's life is of paramount importance for them to grow strong and healthy. With the implementation of good management practices in raising calves, an improvement in the health of the animals and a reduction in mortality is expected, consequently greater profit for the rural producer, since these calves will be the animals used for the production of meat, milk, replacement or sale depending on the purpose of the property. Care starts from the pre-delivery of the cows, going through care with the appropriate deworming, sanitary control, feeding, adequate facilities and well-being. The application of good management practices should continue after weaning. It is recommended that producers and keepers always maintain the principles of good practice and well-being in all farm activities, treating the animals under their care with respect and attention
