Diabetes Mellitus (DM) represents one of the most important public health problems, as it is an increasingly prevalent chronic metabolic pathology, characterized by excess blood glucose. In addition to its complications and impacts at the systemic level, DM is associated with the occurrence of Periodontal Disease (PD), which is identified as the sixth complication of diabetes. The aim of this research was to address the interrelationship between DM and PD, which represents an example of how a systemic disease can predispose an oral infection, and how an oral infection can exacerbate a systemic condition. The methodology was developed through the qualitative method, with the typology of exploratory narrative bibliographic review. For this purpose, articles from electronic journals were used, among others, from 2005 to 2021. It was noticed that DM is a disease that is very relevant to the dental field, therefore it needs to be well observed in the anamnesis. It is of fundamental importance to establish adequate dental planning and treatment for diabetic patients with a focus on promoting well-being and better health conditions for these individuals.
