DENTAL CARE IN PATIENTS WITH DEMENTIA: a literature review

Man's desire to live longer, is becoming more and more real, since the life expectancy of the world population is increasing each day, however as life lengthens, several consequences arise, as it is the case of the increase in the development of chronic diseases, among which dementia is found, which affects the elderly population with increasing prevalence rates along with the advance of age from 65 years onwards. This condition starts with symptoms that are difficult to be detected and associated with it, as is the case of the sporadic occurrence of short-term memory loss, however, in its last stage it has the potential to lead the patient to a state of coma and subsequently the death. Within the multidisciplinary teams of elderly care, there is the dental surgeon, who plays an important role in the three evolutionary stages of dementia. This work aims to carry out a narrative literature review about dental care for patients with dementia, providing a cluster of information, both for dental academics and for professionals in the field, helping them when treating patients who have such condition, providing them with better treatment and greater comfort during their appointments. To carry out this work, scientific papers, presented in Portuguese, English and Spanish, available in online databases such as PubMED, Lillacs, BVSsalud and Scielo, were used as a bibliographic base.
