Resumo: Este trabalho verifica, empiricamente, a existência e magnitude da poupança precaucional no Brasil. Há uma literatura internacional vasta sobre o assunto, porém com uma grande diversidade de resultados. Para o Brasil, há poucos estudos, e este busca contribuir para a verificação da importância do motivo precaucional. Em busca de resultados robustos, são utilizadas diferentes técnicas de estimação, além de dados e instrumentos. Também é evitada a adoção de hipóteses fortes. São encontradas evidências de poupança precaucional fraca no Brasil, indicando a importância de se incluir o motivo precaucional, ainda que tenham se mostrado fraco, nos estudos sobre comportamento do consumidor.

There is a large international literature about this issue, but there is also a wide range of results. For Brazil, there are few, and this one aims to contribute with the conclusion about the importance of precautionary motive. To warranty the robustness of the results, different estimation techniques are used, and also data and instruments. The adoption of strong hypothesis are avoided. The results show evidence of weak precautionary saving in Brazil.
