Job Profile of the Sugar and Oil Sectors in the Northern Rio de Janeiro State from 1970 to 2010

Resumo: This article discusses changes observed in jobs of the sugar and oil industries in northern State of Rio de Janeiro and describes their labor profile. It also identifies the point of inflection for job offer between those sectors. The methodology consists in analyzing secondary data from 1970-2010 demographic censuses collected by the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and other sources. It can be noticed that professional qualification was a central point between both sectors, and that the location of new industrial facilities also changed the distribution of regional potentialities. The effects of the oil industry were not restricted to job opportunities, but they also contributed to the expansion of services in other activities, including educational and health sectors, a demand resulting from its high salaries. Clear signs that the region has really changed over those 40 years are noticed; it re-emerges from sugarcane plantations to a regional profile inserted in the national and international markets.

La metodología consiste en analizar datos secundarios de los Censos Demográficos del Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística - IBGE (1970-2010) y de otras fuentes. Se observa que la cualificación profesional fue el punto central de distanciamiento entre los sectores. Sin embargo, la localización de las nuevas instalaciones industriales también alteró la distribución de las capacidades regionales. Los efectos de la industria petrolera no se limitaron a las nuevas oportunidades de trabajo; también contribuyeron a la expansión de los servicios en otras actividades, así como también en la de los sectores de educación y de salud, en función de la demanda derivada de los altos salarios pagados por la industria petrolera. Se notan señales evidentes de que la región realmente cambió a lo largo de esos 40 años y que resurge de las cenizas de los cañaverales hacia un perfil de región inserida en el mercado nacional o bien en el internacional.Os objetivos deste texto são discutir as mudanças no emprego nos setores açucareiro e petrolífero na região Norte-Fluminense, caracterizar seus trabalhadores e identificar o momento da inflexão quanto à oferta de emprego nesses setores. A metodologia consiste em uma análise de dados secundários dos Censos Demográficos do IBGE (1970-2010) e de outras fontes. Observa-se que a qualificação profissional foi o ponto central de distanciamento entre os setores, mas a localização das novas instalações industriais também alterou a distribuição das potencialidades regionais. Os efeitos da indústria petrolífera não se limitaram às novas oportunidades de trabalho, mas contribuíram para a expansão de serviços em outras atividades, assim como na dos setores educacional e da saúde, em função da demanda derivada dos altos salários pagos pela indústria petrolífera.
