Resumo: The objective of this study is to characterize the specificities of the organic production and the participative certification process. Methodologically, we have chosen a case study of the Center for Support to Small Farmers (CAPA), in Western Parana, and its participative certification process. Structured interviews were conducted with managers and technicians of the CAPA, as well as with a sample of 25 farmers involved in the network. These interviews allowed us to verify that organic farming has been responsible for important changes in the lives of the involved people. We could identify a behavioral change as a result of this conversion, stimulated by constant meetings and exchanges of experiences. It could be observed that the improvement of the life quality has been one of the major reasons that encouraged the producers to adopt this conversion in the regions covered by this study.

Metodologicamente, optou-se pelo estudo de caso a partir do Centro de Apoio ao Pequeno Agricultor-CAPA, na região oeste do Paraná, e o seu processo de certificação participativa. Foram feitas entrevistas estruturadas com os gestores e técnicos do Capa e com uma amostra de 25 produtores envolvidos na rede. Tais entrevistas permitiram verificar que a agricultura orgânica se tornou uma prática que transforma a vida das pessoas envolvidas, pois, para que ocorra a conversão do cultivo tradicional para o orgânico, inicialmente deve ocorrer uma mudança comportamental, o que é estimulado através de reuniões, encontros e trocas de experiências. Pode-se observar que a melhoria da qualidade de vida têm sido um dos principais motivos que levaram os produtores a adotarem a conversão, na área de abrangência deste estudo.
