The WPS Agenda and Women’s Participation in Internacional Mediation

The introduction of the “Women, Peace and Security” (WPS) agenda in the United Nations(UN) system, brought to light the need to have the full, total and equal participation of women in all stages of the peace process , including in mediation processes. The purpose of this paper is to analyze this relationship between the WPS agenda and international mediation, especially after the adoption of Resolution 1325, its advances and challenges. Therefore, the methodological procedure of bibliographic review and analysis of documentary and statistical information will be used, based on the UN Security Council Resolutions on the WPS agenda,UN official documents, theses and dissertations on women and the UN, information data from Igarapé Institute, Global South Unit for Mediation (GSUM), Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) and Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). From this analysis, it can be seen that although the WPS agenda has advanced in its commitments, it still faces difficulties in promoting the participation of women as international mediators, including incountries where there is a greater gender equality. Not only that, women’s participation inmediation is often conditioned by the context in which it is inserted.
