United Nations Peacekeeping Operations: the importance of the Security Council in the light of Minustah case

This paper aims to elucidate the importance of the United Nations Security Council within the scope of peace operations, with the illustrative background of MINUSTAH, an operation that emerged from a specific resolution authorized by the UN on June 1, 2004. As a mission to stabilize the scenario in Haiti, the resolution was committed to the country’s sobriety, independence, territorial integrity and territorial unity in the face of a complicated context of human rights violations arising from the Haitian government’s transition. Therefore, it is intended here to understand the role of the UN Security Council within the context of the pursuit of peace and security, presenting processes, concepts and conjectures related to both the Council and peace operations and Haiti’s scenery, as an illustrative framework about what we intend to address, these being extremely important to understand both the more general and the more specific aspect, as in the case of Haiti. It is based on the qualitative method of analysis, which includes the exploration and description procedures, throughwhich both UN reports and specialized literature about the subject were used.
