Recent labor market transformations in the state of Paraná

The objective of this work is to analyze the changes in the labor market of the State of Paraná, based on data provided by the National Sample Household Survey (PNAD), from IBGE, forthe period 1992-2006. The results of the study point towards an increase in the economically active population, higher than the increase in total population and active age population. Consequently, suggest an increase of the labor supply. Despite of the unemployment decrease in the present decade, the rate fell in urban areas and increased in rural areas during the examined period, suggesting the need for closer attention on public policies in these localities. Finally, the work indicates an increase in job openings in industry, commerce and services fields during the period, and a decrease in agricultural-related labor force occupation, particularly in non-metropolitan areas.
