Resumo: The most sustainable agricultural alternatives in the Amazon depend on a new technological standard, the establishment of which would involve a great deal of effort being put into widening current scientific and technological frontiers, with an impact on small, mid-size and large producers. The time-consuming procedures of the current funding and assessment system are detrimental to agricultural research, with risks and uncertainties that should not be restricted to publication indices. Both reduction of environmental impact and generation of job and income will depend on new economic proposals advocated by non-governmental organizations and other external entities, such as extractive vegetal production, carbon trading, and traditional activities. Using deforested areas for more suitable activities is more important for the population as a whole than returning to the forest.

Para ello, es necesario hacer un gran esfuerzo de expansión de la frontera del conocimiento científico y tecnológico, con resultados para pequeños, medianos y grandes productores. El sistema actual de financiación de la investigación y la evaluación de los investigadores han socavado la investigación agrícola, requiriendo un largo tiempo, con los riesgos y las incertidumbres, las cuales no podrán restringirse a aquellos indicadores de obras publicadas. La reducción de los impactos ambientales y la generación de empleos e ingresos dependerán del cambio de las propuestas habituales, como el extractivismo vegetal, la venta de créditos de carbono y las actividades tradicionales, defendidas por las organizaciones no gubernamentales y entidades externas. Tomar ventaja de las áreas deforestadas con las actividades productivas más adecuadas es más importante para la población en su conjunto que su regreso a la selva.As alternativas agrícolas mais sustentáveis para a região amazônica dependem do estabelecimento de um novo padrão tecnológico. Para isso, é necessário efetuar um grande esforço de ampliação da fronteira do conhecimento científico e tecnológico, com resultados para os pequenos, médios e grandes produtores. O atual sistema de financiamento de pesquisa e de avaliação dos pesquisadores tem prejudicado a pesquisa agrícola por exigir longo tempo, com riscos e incertezas que não podem ficar restritos apenas aos indicadores de trabalhos publicados. A redução dos impactos ambientais e a geração de emprego e de renda vão depender da mudança das propostas usuais, como extrativismo vegetal, venda de créditos de carbono e atividades tradicionais, defendidas pelas organizações não governamentais e entidades externas.
