Resumo: The gestational period is a stage of numerous transformations in the woman's morphophysiology as a result of, as well as the normal development of the pregnant woman. The objective was to understand, through an integrative literature review, the main mechanisms and protocols for the prevention and treatment of gestational diabetes. We opted for the integrative literature review considering the classic studies; as well as complete and unpublished articles published in Portuguese and/or English between the years 2018 and 2022 in the Medline database. Factors such as: weight; age; sex and education directly influence the development of gestational diabetes, requiring a better understanding of the risk factors associated with the health of women and children. Monitoring by health professionals during the gestational period, as well as repeating the tests in the trimesters in question, directly contribute to the prevention and treatment of gestational diabetes through women's health policies and the principle of longitudinality in public health in Brazil.
