Difficulties in Accessing and Using Emergency Contraception

Resumo: Emergency contraception (EC) is a hormonal method that can prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse, when there is failure to use the contraceptive method or in cases of sexual violence. It is restricted to emergency situations, its effectiveness is linked to early use and due to this particularity, in the indicated cases, women need quick access to the method, which makes it opportune to adopt more comprehensive EC strategies in programs of sexual and reproductive education. A literature review of publications produced on the topic is carried out, the state of the art of EA is specifically investigated, the concept, indication, mechanisms of action and main barriers to access to the method are addressed. Health authorities and public policy makers must, therefore, establish educational activities that separate EC from abortion, and train health professionals to provide clarification and methods, aiming to avoid unforeseen pregnancies and unsafe abortions.

Restringe-se a situações emergenciais, sua eficácia está vinculada à precocidade de uso e, em razão dessa particularidade, nos casos indicados, as mulheres necessitam de acesso rápido ao método, o que torna oportuna a adoção de estratégias mais abrangentes da AE, em programas de educação sexual e reprodutiva. Procede-se uma revisão de literatura das publicações produzidas sobre o tema, investiga-se especificamente o estado da arte da AE, aborda-se o conceito, a indicação, os mecanismos de ação e principais barreiras de acesso ao método.
