The role of the nurse in patient quality and safety

Objective: To investigate the multifaceted role of nurses in promoting patient quality and safety in healthcare settings. The study also aimed to assess the nurse's role in identifying and preventing adverse events related to healthcare delivery, with the aim of enhancing patient safety, and to investigate the impact of nursing leadership on the implementation of policies and practices related to patient quality and safety in healthcare units, with an emphasis on continuous improvement of care processes. Methodology: The research was conducted using sources such as PubMed, Scopus, Scielo, the Virtual Health Library (BVS), and the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD). Information from dissertations, books, and relevant works on the topic in question was also included in this review. Articles published between 2019 and 2023 were included in the review, considering the relevance of the most recent publications. Exclusion criteria included articles with undeclared authorship, journals published in foreign languages, as well as paid publications and/or those predating 2019.Results: Nurses are not only frontline caregivers but also leaders in driving positive changes in healthcare systems. Conclusion: Nurses make a significant contribution to creating a safer and higher-quality healthcare environment for patients, an essential goal for any healthcare system.
