Beyond books: exploring Biological Classification (Taxonomy) through the use of Smartphone in Biology

Resumo: This study proposes an educational intervention aimed at teaching the Biological Classification (Taxonomy) of plants, aiming to facilitate and promote the learning of high school students in the discipline of Biology. The approach adopted employs the use of smartphones, making use of a specific application called "PictureThis", available free of charge on the internet. This activity involves students using the application to capture images of plants in the school environment or in the surrounding community. The application offers detailed information about the species, including scientific name, common name, taxonomic classification, cultivation data, particular characteristics and potential risks, such as toxicity. Subsequently, the collected data is discussed in the classroom, allowing the teacher to promote the connection between the theory of Biological Classification and the practice observed during the field activity. This approach aims to enrich the teaching-learning process, making it more effective and engaging for students. The results suggest that the use of smartphones as an auxiliary tool can significantly contribute to improving Biology teaching, especially in the context of the Biological Classification of plants.

A abordagem adotada emprega o uso de smartphones, fazendo uso de um aplicativo específico denominado "PictureThis", disponível gratuitamente na internet. Esta atividade se desenvolve com os alunos utilizando o aplicativo para capturar imagens de plantas no ambiente escolar ou na comunidade circundante. O aplicativo oferece informações detalhadas sobre as espécies, incluindo nome científico, nome comum, classificação taxonômica, dados de cultivo, características particulares e potenciais riscos, como toxicidade. Posteriormente, os dados coletados são discutidos em sala de aula, permitindo que o professor promova a conexão entre a teoria da Classificação Biológica e a prática observada durante a atividade de campo. Esta abordagem visa enriquecer o processo de ensino-aprendizagem, tornando-o mais eficaz e envolvente para os alunos.
