Resumo: | Objectives: to describe the epidemiological profile of morbidity and mortality due to cholecystitis and cholelithiasis in Brazil and its regions, between 2012 and 2021; evaluate the temporal trend of morbidity and mortality due to cholecystitis and cholelithiasis in Brazil and its regions in the same period. Methods: Ecological time series study with open data on mortality and hospital admissions for cholecystitis and cholelithiasis in Brazil. Data were studied in the period 2012-2021, according to region of the country, state and cause of death/hospitalization. Mortality and hospitalization rates were calculated using the IBGE resident population in the locations and years evaluated. The temporal trend was calculated using the JoinPoint model, where the Annual Percentage Variation (APV) was considered growth when positive, decreasing when negative and stationary when not significant (p>0.05). Results: In Brazil, 38,370 deaths from cholecystitis and cholelithiasis were recorded from 2012-2021. The average Brazilian rate was 1.86 deaths/100 thousand and 118.24 hospitalizations/100 thousand. Brazil showed a decrease of 4.9% per year in hospitalizations. The state of Maranhão was the only one to show a growth in hospitalizations of 3.3% per year. In terms of mortality, seven states showed annual growth, with Roraima standing out with an increase of 18.7% per year. In the North, Northeast and South regions, an increase in mortality rates of 1.9%, 2.1% and 1.3% per year, respectively, was identified. Conclusion: In Brazil, high rates of hospital morbidity and mortality due to cholecystitis and cholelithiasis were identified. Regarding the temporal trend, there was an annual reduction in hospital admissions in some states and in all Brazilian macro-regions and mortality increased, especially in the North and Northeast regions. |
