Mental health nursing care after psychiatric reform

In view of the high rate of people with mental disorders, research is carried out on nursing care in mental health after the psychiatric reform in order to assess the role of nurses in assisting patients with mental problems. Integrative review research with descriptive analysis and qualitative approach. The study aimed to address the role of nurses in the mental health team. Allied to these objectives, a theoretical foundation was sought regarding advances in nursing in psychiatric practice, focusing on patient care and acceptance. The results showed that, in view of this, it appears that the psychiatric reform provided nurses with a model of humanized care and expansion of their activities, which were previously focused only on symptoms and medication administration. The collected data were distributed in three thematic axes: psychiatric knowledge; the historical process and advances in psychiatric nursing in Brazil and nursing care for patients after the psychiatric reform. The main reform changes were the focus on patient care and assistance, influencing professionals to promote innovative health promotion and prevention actions. Conclusion: It is not enough just to apply drugs, it is necessary to humanize the care and appreciation of the patient, as well as the relationship between the patient and the nurse, in order to eradicate the problem.
