Resumo: Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis (CVL) is a serious disease caused by the protozoan Leishmania infantum, transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Lutzomyia. The main symptoms include weight loss, weakness, anemia, intermittent fever and kidney problems. There are several therapeutic options for the treatment of CVL, but the cure is still not guaranteed. In addition, measures to prevent and combat the transmitting vector are important for controlling the disease. New strategies for controlling and preventing CVL, such as the use of vaccines and combined therapies, are being studied to improve the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Prevention and control of CVL are important not only for the health of dogs, but also for public health, since the disease can be transmitted to humans.
