Resumo: This paper echoes a broader and collective endeavor from the Brazilian scholarly community. It aims to analyze critically the evolution of the business administration as a scientifi c fi eld in the country. In fact, in the last two decades, a number of empirical studies and essays were published. In this paper, however, we take an alternative route. This is a preliminary attempt to portrait the Brazilian scientific production after a quantitative approach. We identifi ed and quantifi ed scientific papers published in Brazilian printed "A" journals in the period 2002-2006. We present a ranking based on the production of the leading research institutions. We discuss the results and note that the ranking, albeit providing valuable information, is somehow limited as a performance indicator for the Brazilian scientifi c production. This is due to the high degree of endogeny observed in three of the four journals analyzed. De fato, nos últimos anos, diversos estudos de base empírica e ensaios têm sido publicados. Neste trabalho, toma-se uma via al ternativa. Trata-se de um esforço inicial para retratar, com base em uma abordagem quantitativa, a produção nos vários domínios da Administração de Empresas no Brasil. Assim, procuramos avaliar a produção veiculada em quatro revistas na - cionais impressas “A”, no período 2002 a 2006 (cinco anos). Apresentamos a contribuição dos principais centros de pesquisa do país, na forma de um ranking de produção científi ca. Discutimos os resultados encontrados e notamos que, embora o ranking desenvolvido permita valiosas observações, sua validade como indicador da produção científi ca brasileira é prejudicada por efeitos endogênicos constatados em três das quatro revistas utilizadas como fontes.
