Social Representations Circulating in the Marginal Period of the Rite of Passage: The Case of Forensic Experts in Probationary Period

Resumo: | This paper proposes to identify the social representations constructed by forensic experts on probation, therefore standing at the marginal period of the rite of passage. The notion of rite that pervades the article is based on Turner (1974), Van Gennep (1978), DaMatta (1978; 1983), Rivière (1997), Segalen (2000) and Peirano (2003). It is defined as an extraordinary moment when values and knowledge are introduced to initiates in order to incorporate them into the cultural universe they are about to enter. Social representations constructed over this period will present peculiarities inherent to the position held by initiates. According to Sperber (2001), from an anthropological perspective social representations emerge from a composition articulated around the representation itself, its contents, a user and a producer (who might sometimes be the user himself or herself). Mental representations are those constructed inside the user. Public representations are mental representations shared among the members of a given group. Each member of a social group or community has an inner gamma of mental representations; when publicized, part of that knowledge or representations will be shared among the members of the group. Thus, subjects will construct their mental representations based on that first publicized. The ethnographic method made it possible to follow the initiates from the separation stage to the margin moment. Initiates were approached by participant and simple observation from May 2009 to June 2012. The representations that circulated in the liminal stage considered the work as: emotional distress, a positive value, interfering in family life, identified as CSI, positive and negative in the eyes of the police, black humour and lack of resources. It is worth to mention that humility and criticism with positive aspects were practiced, despite the initiates being newcomers to the public service. That confirms theorizing made by anthropologists to whom humility and moderation are the kind of behavior to be expected in the marginal stage of the rite of passage. |

La concepción de ritual que nortea el artículo está basada en los autores Turner (1974), Van Gennep (1978), DaMatta (1978; 1983), Riviére (1997), Segalen (2000) y Peirano (2003) y es definida como un momento extraordinario donde los valores y conocimientos son presentados a los novatos como una manera de ponerlos en el universo cultural donde están ingresando. Las representaciones sociales construidas a lo largo de ese período van presentar características propias a la posición ocupada por los novatos. Tenemos que las representaciones sociales según Sperber (2001), en una visión antropológica, surgen de una composición articulada alrededor de la representación en si mismo, del contenido de esa representación, de un usuario y de un productor (que en algunos casos puede ser el propio usuario). Las representaciones mentales son aquellas construidas en el interior del usuario. Las representaciones públicas son las representaciones mentales compartidas entre las personas de un determinado grupo. Los sujetos integrantes de una comunidad o grupo social, en cada uno hay una gama de representaciones donde parte de ese saber o de esas representaciones serán cuando públicas compartidas entre los integrantes del grupo. Así, los sujetos van a construir sus representaciones mentales iguales a que originalmente fue publicada. El método etnográfico permitió acompañar los ingresantes desde el período de la separación hasta el momento de la margen. La observación participante y simple fue empleada desde mayo de 2009 hasta junio de 2012 junto a los novatos. Las representaciones circulantes en la fase de la liminaridad contemplaron el trabajo como: desgaste emocional, un valor positivo, interfiriendo en la vida familiar, identificado como CSI, positivo y negativo a los ojos de la policía, humor sarcástico y falta de recursos. Cabe destacar que la humildad y las críticas acompañadas de aspectos positivos se accionaron, aunque los novatos fuesen ingresantes del sector público, lo que confirma las tesis elaboradas por antropólogos que enfatizan la humildad y el comedimiento como comportamientos esperados en la fase de margen del ritual de pasaje.O trabalho tem por objetivo identificar as representações sociais construídas pelos peritos criminais em estágio probatório, portanto, no período de margem do ritual de passagem. As representações sociais construídas ao longo desse período vão apresentar peculiaridades inerentes à posição ocupada pelos neófitos. Sendo que as representações sociais, de acordo com Sperber (2001), dentro de uma ótica antropológica, emergem de uma composição articulada em torno da representação em si, do conteúdo dessa representação, de um usuário e de um produtor (que em alguns casos pode ser o próprio usuário). As representações mentais são aquelas construídas no interior do usuário. As representações públicas são as representações mentais compartilhadas entre as pessoas de um determinado grupo. Os sujeitos integrantes de uma comunidade ou grupo social, cada um deles possui em seu interior uma gama de representações mentais, sendo que parte desse saber ou dessas representações serão ao se tornarem públicas, compartilhadas entre os integrantes do grupo. Assim, os sujeitos vão construir suas representações mentais semelhantes a aquela originalmente publicizada. O método etnográfico permitiu acompanhar os ingressantes desde o estágio da separação até o momento de margem. A observação participante e simples foi empreendida desde maio de 2009 até junho de 2012 junto aos neófitos. As representações circulantes na fase de liminaridade contemplaram o trabalho como: desgaste emocional, um valor positivo, interferindo na vida familiar, identificado como CSI, positivo e negativo aos olhos da polícia, humor negro e falta de recursos.
