Resumo: Iron ore is an important product in the Brazilian exports. In this sense, this article aims to analyze the behavior of Brazilian exports of iron ore, from 2000 to 2008, using the Revealed Regional Orientation Index, Index of Comparative Advantage and Constant Market Share. To calculate the latter indicator, the analysis period was divides into three sub-periods: 2000 to 2002, 2003 to 2005 and 2006 to 2008. The Revealed Comparative Advantage Index showed that the Brazilian ore has been losing international market share and the Regional Orientation Index showed that Brazilian exports are being directed to China. Through the analysis of the Constant-Market-Share, it was observed that the effect which more contributed to the increase in Brazilian exports of iron ore was the growth of world trade, throughout the period analyzed, while the effect destination of exports was negative in the same period and the effect competitiveness was positive only between sub-periods from 2003/2005 to 2006/2008. Based on these results, it can be said that although Brazil has a significant importance in world trade in iron ore, the country needs to overcome the challenges related to cost-Brazil to become more competitive in this market.

Por lo tanto, este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar el comportamiento de las exportaciones brasileñas de mineral de hierro, de 2000 a 2008, utilizando el Índice de Orientación Regional, el Indice de Ventajas Comparativas Reveladas y Constant-Market-Share. Para calcular este último indicador, el período de análisis se dividió en tres sub-períodos: 2000 a 2002, 2003 a 2005 y de 2006 a 2008. El Índice de Ventajas Comparativas Reveladas mostró que el mineral brasileño ha ido perdiendo cuota de mercado internacional y el Índice de Orientación Regional indicó que las exportaciones brasileñas se dirigen a China. A través del análisis de lo Constant-Market-Share, se observó que el efecto que ha contribuido a incrementar las exportaciones del mineral fue el crecimiento del comercio mundial durante el período analizado, siendo que el efecto destino de las exportaciones fue negativo y el efecto competitividad fue positiva sólo entre los sub-períodos de 2003/2005 a 2006/2008. Basándose en estos resultados, se puede decir que aunque Brasil tiene una gran importancia en el comercio mundial de mineral de hierro, el país tiene que superar los desafíos relacionados con el costo-Brasil para ser más competitivos en este mercado.O minério de ferro representa um importante produto na pauta de exportações brasileiras. Por isso, este artigo objetivou analisar o comportamento das exportações brasileiras de minério de ferro, de 2000 a 2008, utilizando o Índice de Orientação Regional, o Índice de Vantagem Comparativa Revelada e o Constant Market Share. Para o cálculo do último indicador, o período de análise foi dividido em três sub-períodos: de 2000 a 2002, de 2003 a 2005 e de 2006 a 2008. O Índice de Orientação Regional indicou que as exportações brasileiras estão direcionadas para a China e o Índice de Vantagem Comparativa Revelada mostrou que o minério brasileiro vem perdendo participação no mercado internacional. Por meio da análise do Constant Market Share, observou-se que o efeito que mais contribuiu para o aumento das exportações do mineral foi o crescimento do comércio mundial, em todo o período analisado, sendo que o efeito destino das exportações foi negativo e o efeito competitividade foi positivo apenas entre os sub-períodos de 2003/2005 a 2006/2008.
