The Third Riverbank of Critical Studies on Management and Organizations in Brazil: (Re)thinking the Critique from Post-Colonialism

Resumo: The aim of this paper is to present an introduction to postcolonial thought from its origin, the main areas of study and from possible dialogues between the Anglophone and Latin American traditions. To do that, we analyze the notions of subalternity, decolonization and hybridity as a theoretical possibility to explore the post-colonial perspective in the Brazilian critical organization studies. Although the debate on post-colonialism and subordination is relatively new in organizational studies, in and out of Brazil, the literature review in the area shows that, even outside the context of post-colonial demarche, many works produced about management and organizations in Brazil took into account the same concerns of postcolonial authors. Indirectly, the works address topics that are related to the effects of colonialism on the contemporary world and still recognize the need to decolonize this field of study when considering the question of cultural dependency in Brazilian intellectual tradition and technology transfer between managerial countries of the center and the periphery, when problematize the use of theories produced in the Global North and seek references that value a look from the Global South, and they identify the strong presence of the dynamic Brazilian cultural hybridity. On the other hand, when analyzing the field of critical studies in Brazil, we find the presence of a dichotomy that tends to radicalize the center/periphery relationship with the separation between a supposedly Brazilian critical study on organizations and critical management studies (CMS). Such distinction performs an intellectual binarism typical of colonial mentality. Such mentality in this particular case seeks to define what is and is not critical approach in Management and Organization Studies. Aiming to challenge such binary wisdom, we propose a hybridization process that aim to reconcile the two poles of the binary perspective. To conclude, we argue that the theoretical and political development of both sides depends on a perspective that exploits the fissures of colonial discourse and from a third space perspective reconfigures knowledge production.

Para ello, se discuten los conceptos de subordinación, la descolonización y la hibridez como una posibilidad teórica para explorar la perspectiva poscolonial en los estudios críticos sobre las organizaciones en Brasil. Aunque el debate sobre el post-colonialismo y la subordinación es relativamente nuevo en los estudios organizacionales, dentro y fuera de Brasil, la revisión de la literatura en el área de muestra que, incluso fuera del contexto de las démarche post-colonial, muchas obras producidas sobre la gestión y las organizaciones en Brasil llevaron en cuenta las mismas preocupaciones de los autores poscoloniales. De manera indirecta, las obras abordan temas que están relacionados con los efectos del colonialismo en el mundo contemporáneo y todavía reconocer la necesidad de descolonizar este campo de estudio al considerar la cuestión de la dependencia cultural en la tradición intelectual de Brasil y la transferencia de tecnología entre la gestión de países del centro y de la periferia, al problematizar el uso de las teorías producidas en el Norte Global y buscar referencias que valoran una mirada desde el Sur Global, e identifican la fuerte presencia de la hibridez en la  dinámica cultura brasileña. Por otro lado, cuando se analiza el campo de los estudios críticos en Brasil, observamos la presencia de una dicotomía que tiende a la radicalización de la relación centro / periferia con la separación entre una supuesta critica nacional y el critical management studies (CMS), interpretando a un tipo de binarismo intelectual típico  de la mentalidad colonial, que en este caso trata de definir quién es y quién no es crítico. Para superar este impasse, se propone un proceso de hibridación que puede conciliar los dos polos. Al final de la prueba, se argumenta que el desarrollo de ambas partes teóricas y políticas depende de un enfoque que aprovecha las grietas del discurso colonial y configuración de un tercer espacio de producción de conocimiento.O objetivo deste ensaio é apresentar uma introdução ao pensamento pós-colonial a partir da sua origem, das principais vertentes de estudo e de possíveis diálogos entre as tradições anglófona e latino-americana. Para tanto, discutimos os conceitos de subalternidade, descolonização e hibridismo como possibilidade teórica de se explorar a perspectiva pós-colonial nos estudos críticos sobre organizações no Brasil. Embora o debate sobre subalternidade e pós-colonialismo seja relativamente novo nos estudos organizacionais, dentro e fora do Brasil, a revisão da literatura na área mostra que, mesmo fora do contexto da démarche pós-colonial, muitos trabalhos produzidos sobre administração e organizações no Brasil levaram em conta as mesmas preocupações dos autores pós-coloniais. De forma indireta, os trabalhos abordam temas que estão ligados aos efeitos do colonialismo no mundo contemporâneo e ainda reconhecem a necessidade de se descolonizar este campo de estudos quando analisam a questão da dependência cultural na tradição intelectual brasileira e na transferência de tecnologia gerencial entre países do centro e da periferia, quando problematizam o uso de teorias produzidas no Norte Global e buscam referências que valorizem um olhar a partir do Sul Global, e quando identificam a forte presença do hibridismo na dinâmica cultural brasileira. Por outro lado, ao analisar o campo de estudos críticos no Brasil, constatamos a presença de uma visão dicotômica que tende a radicalizar a relação centro/periferia com a separação entre uma suposta crítica nacional e o critical management studies (CMS), reproduzindo um tipo de binarismo intelectual típico da mentalidade colonial, que neste caso busca definir quem é e quem não é crítico. A fim de superar este impasse, propomos um processo de hibridização capaz de reconciliar os dois pólos.
