A PRESENÇA DE DEPRESSÃO EM PACIENTES DURANTE O PERÍODO DE REABILITAÇÃO FÍSICA E O IMPACTO NA QUALIDADE DE VIDA DOS MESMOS

Depression is a term which describes a series of complex behaviour and it has been used to designate not only a normal affective state but also a sympton, a syndrome and one or several diseases. It is characterized by a group of symptons related to a given situation or yet by their appearing in a repeated way and/or without any apparent reason. The principal symptoms for depression diagnosis are: appetite alteration, psychomotor agitation or lethargy, energy decreasing or excessive tiredness, guilt sensation, difficulties to concentrate and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide. The quality of life is related to a complete physical, mental and social welfare of the individual. This study aims at investigating the presence of depression in patients suffering from rheumatical and neurological diseases who are under a physiotherapeutics treatment at the Clínica Escola de Fisioterapia da Universidade Metodista de São Paulo and analyse the impact of depression on their quality of life. Some individuals from the neurology and rheumatology departments under treatment from June to August of 2003 were chosen. They have answered two questionnaires, Beck Depression Inventory to investigate about the presence of depression and the Medical Outcomes Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) to evaluate the quality of life. The results obtained were analysed by the T-student test, Pearson correlation, Cluster analysis, and Wilks Lambda. The data were analysed in the Statistica program. It was adopted a significance level of 5% (p≤ 0,05).The conclusion was the following: during the physical rehabilitation of the individuals participating in this study, a significant number of patients showed depression in different levels, with probable incidence in the rheumatical group and this same very group showed na inferior quality of life from those individuals of the neurological group evaluated in this study
