The life of José Manoel da Conceição, since his childhood until his death, has a primordial meaning for the implantation of Presbyterianism in Brazil, in the second half of the 19th cen-tury. In other words, it is the story of the first Brazilian Catholic priest who left roman cathol-icism to embrace Protestantism, becoming a Presbyterian and turning himself into the first Brazilian pastor. It is said of an evangelist who suffered existential crises during his life as a Catholic priest and later as a Protestant pastor. Nevertheless, he had always been an active preacher of the Bible, without being bound by any religious institutional austerity. Since then, we have sought to know his training as a priest, understand his existential crises in different denominations, and, finally, analyze his pastoral practice as a priest and then as a Presbyterian pastor. Therefore, this bibliographic research is restricted to the study of historical sources of Catholicism and Brazilian Protestantism, which will allow us to understand what was the pas-toral practice that José Manoel da Conceição developed first in Roman Catholicism and later in Presbyterianism. The course of this research also required a detailed study of his primary socialization, that is, of his family, school and religious education, in accordance with his so-cio-political-economic and educational-religious context, so that we could understand his pas-toral trajectory.
