Os filisteus e a batalha de Gelboé: evidências arqueológicas e textuais que retratam a trajetória filisteia em Canaã e análise exegética de 1Sm 31

This research work is constituted fundamentally by the investigation on the trajectory of the philistines in Canaan, based on biblical texts and on the interpretation of archaeological records of several authors, and presents the exegetical analysis of 1Sm 31, 1-13. The referred biblical text narrates the Battle of Gilboa, fought between philistines and military forces of Saul, in which the king and three of his sons were killed during the combat, creating implications for the israeli/jewish context, mainly with regards to the succession of the fallen king. Marked by the dialogue between biblical text and archeology, the reconstructing process of the philistine past sought to shed light on its contextual configuration, covering cultural, geopolitical, and technological aspects since its arrival in Canaan, between the end of the 13th century BC and the beginning of the 12th century BC, until its total disappearance, between the end of 7th century BC and the beginning of the 6th century BC. Within the scope of the discussions involving the theme, a glimpse of the broad spectrum of the debate was undertaken, covering from authors’ analysis aligned with traditional archeology to new theories that challenge the biblical chronology and the dating of the reigns of Saul, David, and Solomon, as well as Saul and his sons’ combatants and executioners identities at the Battle of Gilboa. Thus, the combination of biblical texts, archaeological interpretations, and exegetical analysis of 1Sm 31, 1-13, composing the instrumental set used throughout the dissertation, allowed an illuminating survey about this topic and other questions brought during this work.
