This is the first resarch ofgrilagem (squatting) taken as the clandestine possession of lands, either from public on private dominio at the city as Belém, Pará,Brazil. 244 formularies were handled containing 25 items. There research areas were chosen: Ubá, Barreiral and Areial. 25% of the population answered the inqueiries. The results show two modalities of grilagem: direct and indirect tenure. Due to the local situation and social conditions, more attention is given to Areial, near the limits of the urban expansion of Belém, which has the most probability to increase. For this group, based on Abrams (1967), six types were estabilished: 1) proprietary squatter; 2) land lord squatter; 3) renter squatter; 4) tenant squatter); 5) speculator squatter; 6) crafts-man squatter. 41,6% of the 156 informants of the Areial lived in a State Government lands without permission (direct tenure). The houses are of wood with thatched roofs, several have thatched, roofs and walls, witth earthen floors. The general results show a situation show a situation of social of social transition
