The object of study of this thesis is the process of creating and expansion of the University of the State of Mato Grosso (UNEMAT), from 1985 to 2013. The main questions to the deepening of this study are the following: What are the specificities of UNEMAT, in a higher education expansion process occurred after the 1990s? What are the reasons that triggered the UNEMAT expansion process? What reasons made the traditional model to prevail in detriment of the initial proposal? The thesis has its theorical - methodological basis on the Marxist theory, qualifying it as a result of the qualitative research. We divided this process in two different stages for the presentation: the first stage, between 1985 and 1996, and the second stage, from 2000 to 2013, that explain different stages of the UNEMAT expansion. The research required the previous analysis of the facts and historical events related to materiality of the state higher education, mediated by a combination of expansion and improvisations. The results show a University that looks like a platypus. The research reveals that the UNEMAT throughout its history, tried out new things without breaking up with the expansion process deficiencies. It has not constituted in excellence by tradition and much less by innovation.
