The construction industry is responsible for causing major environmental impacts, such as the consumption of raw materials, waste and pollution, so it is necessary that measures to reduce these impacts to be considered at an early stage of design, construction and the end of life of the building. Through a bibliometric analysis of international production was possible to identify the main topics on sustainability in construction, meet the most productive authors and the most discussed topics in this way it was possible to create a relevant theoretical framework. This analysis desmonstrou energy consumption of buildings and the development of new technologies are primarily published matters. Following a case study at the Federal University of ABC was conducted in order to identify the main design solutions capable of generating positive results on sustainability means to improve the environmental performance of buildings and identify possible points to be improved especially in hiring new projects. The results showed that the most relevant aspects that resulted in sustainable solutions were already provided from the early stages of design and use and occupancy evaluation data are needed to assess the performance of the building, and also that the assessment of post occupation should be done regularly, both to assess building performance, but also to see if the design solutions were implemented and fulfilled what was intended.
