The Church in the constitution of an urban network in the eighteenth century in Brazil

Resumo: The understanding of the complex and asymmetric power relations between the agents that produce the space allows us to identify internationalities and distance ourselves from a naturalized perspective of the dynamics of occupation and use of territories. In this article, based on this fundamental premise to the studies of Historical Geography, the objective is to analyze the role of the Church as hegemonic agent in the relations of production of space in colonial Brazil. From the empirical of the 18th century in the Recôncavo Baiano (around Salvador, colonial capital until 1763), in the light of primary research in Brazilian and Portuguese archives, seven imbricated roles assumed by the Church (Regular, Secular and Lay Orders) in the constitution and dynamics of that regional network that articulated the city and inland villages are related. As a result, it is presented a cartogram that overlays the units built by the Church (matrices and chapels), the nuclei of settlement and the roads (terrestrial and fluvio maritime) that crossed the region.

En este artículo, desde esta premisa fundamental hasta los estudios de Geografía Histórica, el objetivo es analizar el papel de la Iglesia como agente hegemónico en las relaciones de producción en el espacio en Brasil colonial. Basado en la región de Bahía (“Recôncavo Baiano”) del siglo XVIII (alrededor de Salvador, capital colonial hasta 1763), a la luz de la investigación primaria en archivos brasileños y portugueses, se relacionan siete funciones entrelazadas asumidas por la Iglesia (Ordenes Regular, Secular y Laical) en la constitución y dinámica de esa red regional que articulaba el centro de la ciudad y los pueblos. Como resultado, se presenta un cartograma que superpone las unidades construidas por la Iglesia (matrices y capillas), los asentamientos y los caminos (tierra y río) que atravesaban la región.O entendimento das complexas e assimétricas relações de poder que se dão entre os agentes produtores do espaço permite identificar intencionalidades e se distanciar de uma perspectiva naturalizada da dinâmica de ocupação e uso dos territórios. Nesse artigo, a partir dessa premissa fundamental aos estudos de Geografia Histórica, objetiva-se analisar o papel da Igreja como agente hegemônico nas relações de produção do espaço no Brasil colonial. A partir do Recôncavo Baiano setecentista (entorno de Salvador, capital colonial até 1763), à luz de pesquisa primária em arquivos brasileiros e portugueses, relacionam-se sete imbricadas funções assumidas pela Igreja (Regular, Secular e Ordens leigas) na constituição daquela rede regional que articulava cidade e vilas interiores.
