What is the importance of public spaces in the context of fragmented cities? To answer this question, we will divide this article into two parts: in the first, based on a recent bibliographic review, we propose a theoretical and empirical reflection on the possible relationships between the themes of sociospatial fragmentation and public spaces, taking the city of Rio de Janeiro as an example; In the second part, in the light of our empirical data from a primary source, questionnaires, and interviews, we propose a reflection on the opinion of visitors to the three largest and most iconic squares in the neighborhood of Tijuca (RJ) on issues related to the theme of public spaces. The article concludes that, in the context of fragmented cities, public spaces play a fundamental role: meeting diverse publics.
