Resumo: This article presents the proposal of understanding the public space as an active expression of used territory. For this, the theoretical discussion dedicated to the public sphere, to public space in general, and to public space in geography is presented. Finally, the proposal of understanding the public space as an active expression of used territory especially for the study of the theme in the context of Latin America is presented. Understanding the public space in this way it is possible to glimpse the existence of hegemonic and counter-hegemonic rationalities that characterize it. Therefore, this proposal adds a contribution to the understanding of public space through geography.

Para ello, se presenta la discusión teórica que se dedica a la esfera pública, al espacio público en general y al espacio público en geografía. Finalmente, se anuncia la propuesta de entender el espacio público como expresión activa del territorio usado especialmente para el estudio del tema en el contexto de América Latina. Entendiendo así el espacio público es posible vislumbrar la existencia de racionalidades hegemónicas y contrahegemónicas que lo caracterizan. Esta propuesta, por tanto, suma una contribución a la comprensión del espacio público a través de la geografía.Este artigo apresenta a proposta de compreensão do espaço público como expressão ativa do território usado. Para isso, é apresentada a discussão teórica que se dedica à esfera pública, ao espaço público de modo geral, e ao espaço público na Geografia. Por fim, anuncia-se a proposta de compreensão do espaço público como expressão ativa do território usado especialmente para o estudo do tema no contexto da América Latina. Entendendo o espaço público desta forma, é possível vislumbrar a existência de racionalidades hegemônicas e contra hegemônicas que o caracterizam.
