Resumo: Brazil is a large agro-exporter of products linked to agribusiness. Among the main productions, we can highlight the sugarcane that has presented in the last decades expansion in planted area and production of ethanol and sugar, aimed at the domestic market and also international. Some Brazilian states stand out in this process, such as São Paulo, Goiás and Mato Grosso, and are among the largest producers. The objective of this study is to understand the process of sugarcane expansion for the state of Goiás, with emphasis on the Ceres microregion, one of the main sugarcane regions of this state. It was concluded that in the region studied there are serious socio-spatial effects resulting from sugar cane activity, as well as latent conflicts, between agribusiness and family agriculture, often legitimized by the discourse of development, which is in fact incomplete, and by the a myth of progress linked to the Brazilian agribusiness discourse.
