Resumo: The public space of the historic centers of Mexican cities has been forged from social and economic practices, regulations, public works, as well as the limitation or incentive of certain activities by the municipal authority. At present, informal trade practices, political expressions and citizen protest are confronted with the interest in safeguarding the built heritage and its tourist use, which has led to the appearance of new activities in these spaces. In order to undertake an investigation about the new emerging uses in public space and their effects on the built heritage, the historical evolution of the use, regulation and public works in these sites is reviewed, based on the analysis of texts and participatory observation, taking as a case study the historic center of Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico.
