Resumo: The present study seeks to understand how the cultivated and also lost plants of the Asurini of the Xingu River (Amazon) play social, symbolic and identitary roles for this people, and how they are incorporated by the Asurini in narratives about their recent past. During research in the Itaaka and Kwatinema villages, a survey was carried out on agricultural practices in current cultivating fields and visits to past cultivating fields; in addition, semi-structured interviews with Asurini women and men were conducted. The data obtained were then discussed in view of the social role that plants currently cultivated and plants lost in recent history play among the Asurini today. Lastly, we sought to understand how the study of agriculture and the consumption of plants cultivated among the Asurini in the past can be a fruitful approach for reflecting about the present and future of this people.
