Resumo: This article analyzes the materiality of funeral practices in Lower Casamance in the 16th and 17th centuries. In this region, the importance of life after death was the guiding principle of funeral practices. The article presents different historical contexts in which funeral rites occurred and the materials the dead carried to the other world. This analysis of the burial rite and practices allows us to understand a series of political, economic, social, and cultural articulations of local realities. Ceremonial practices in the Cacheu and Sierra Leone regions were different. Despite this, we argue that, in both areas, burials were at the center of sociability relationships between the living and ancestors and between people from the same group.

En esta región, la importancia de la vida después de la muerte era el principio rector de las prácticas funerarias. El artículo presenta diferentes contextos históricos en los que ocurrieron los ritos funerarios y los materiales que los muertos llevaban al otro mundo. Este análisis del rito y las prácticas funerarias nos permite comprender una serie de articulaciones políticas, económicas, sociales y culturales de las realidades locales. Las prácticas ceremoniales en las regiones de Cacheu y Sierra Leona eran diferentes. A pesar de esto, sostenemos que, en ambas regiones, los entierros estaban en el centro de las relaciones de sociabilidad entre los vivos y los antepasados y entre personas del mismo grupo.O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a materialidade das práticas funerárias no Oeste africano no Baixo Casamansa nos séculos 16 e 17. A importância da vida após a morte era o fio condutor das práticas funerárias. Neste texto discutimos os contextos históricos em que aconteciam os ritos funerários, bem como os materiais que os mortos levavam consigo para o outro mundo. Esta análise do rito e das práticas de sepultamento permite compreender uma série de articulações de cunho político, econômico, social e cultural das realidades locais. As práticas cerimoniais na região de Cacheu e em Serra Leoa eram diferentes.
