"YOU CAN ALREADY BE BURIED": FUNERARY SPACES IN THE MAPUÁ-PÁ RIVER

The text deals with three funerary spaces (one indigenous and two historical) on the Mapuá River, municipality of Breves, Marajó archipelago. It is guided by the following questions: how are the funerary spaces on the Mapuá River perceived by the residents in the contemporary? What do these spaces narrate in relation to the occupation of the Amazon rainforest? What do they tell you about the people and way of life of the past?  The methodology adopted involved semi-structured interviews, participant observation and mapping of archaeological occurrences. These data, analyzed in the light of the bibliography, indicate that the residents perceive the funerary spaces in a different way: the indigenous funerary space, constantly reoccupied, is not perceived as a cemetery; Historic funerary spaces are seen as results of the gum economy and reflect the purchasing power of buried subjects. It is concluded that funerary spaces are important keys to understand how residents relate to ancestral memory, territory and the materiality of the past.
