Resumo: Criotherapy with liquid nitrogen has been therapeutically used in different types of tissues. However, there are still no records in literature regarding its use in root canals. Therefore, this paper’s objective is to elaborate an experimental model in vitro to find out about dental tissue behavior in temperature conductivity with the application of liquid nitrogen, and to establish a protocol for its application. Thermocouples firmed to the external root surface in the apical, medial, coronal and inner part of the canal were used as sensors to measure temperature variation with a tooth kept in thermal calibration. The criotherapic agent used was an open system liquid nitrogen in the form of intracanal spray applied to the apical region. The signals were digitalized and analyzed through a software. Thirteen tests were carried out, with 15-second applications, divided in 3 groups and according to the following room temperature: 20ºC, 25ºC and 27ºC. Average temperatures obtained were: intracanal, apical region -45,23ºC, external root surface, apical region -19,77ºC, medial region - 17,46ºC and coronal region 4,15ºC. It was concluded that the experimental model made possible an understanding of dental structure conductivity when a criotherapic agent is applied to the inner root canal. It was also verified that the 15-second applications on the proposed model reach temperatures capable of causing cellular death to dental sustaining structures located near root apice.

Made available in DSpace on 2011-12-27T14:14:08Z (GMT).
