Resumo: The aim of this study was to evaluate the speed of space closure in canine retraction submitted to two distinct methods (elastomeric chains and niquel-titanium closed coil springs) and to determine: mean speed, effect of sex and extrabucal appliance in dental movement mean speed occurred in each system. The sample consisted of 15 patients with Angle 1st division Class II malocclusion, with a mean age of 16,3 years ±5,6, being 8 boys and 7 girls, from these, 5 used extrabucal appliance and 10 were submitted to first premolar extractions. Upper canine retraction was achieved with powerchain elastics in the upper right quadrant and with niquel-titanium coil springs in the upper left quadrant providing a starting force of 150 g. Canine retraction was evaluated until canine retraction was completed or up to a maximum of 5 visits. At each recall, stone models were taken. The evaluation of space closure mean speed was accomplished in 4 different places (3 between canine-premolar and 1 between caninemolar) and anchorage loss measured between first permanent molar and medial point of third palatal rugae in stone models. Results showed greater canine retraction speed employing elastomeric chains, and there was not difference between male and female patients and between patients that used extrabucal appliance and submitted to extractions. Anchorage loss occurred in two retraction methods, however there was not significant difference between two systems to male and female patients. The comparison between patients that used extrabucal appliance and submitted to extractions showed that the anchorage loss was greater in extraction group with elastomeric chain.

Made available in DSpace on 2011-12-27T14:14:13Z (GMT).
