Resumo: This study aims to know the frequence of low birth weight a University Hospital Maternity in Brazil and to identify risk factors. Data from 200 promptuaries were analysed showing an incidence of 19.2% and risk factors appears in following decreasing arder: gestational age, gestational history, parity, tabacco use, scholarship levei, maternal age and prenatal consultation. Through the methods applied and after discussion of results in accordance with the present knowledge about the subject, the sarne conclusions of other studies were reached. lt was also possible to verifify a high frequence of data without register or inadequately obtained during the prenatal consultation at this hospital.

Through the methods applied and after discussion of results in accordance with the present knowledge about the subject, the sarne conclusions of other studies were reached. lt was also possible to verifify a high frequence of data without register or inadequately obtained during the prenatal consultation at this hospital.Objetivando conhecer a freqüência de baixo peso ao nascer na Maternidade de um Hospital Universitário e identificar os fatores de risco (FR) entre esta clientela, foram utilizados 200 prontuários que serviram de base para coleta de dados. Os resultados permitiram concluir que a incidência é de 19,2% e os FRs aparecem na seguinte ordem decrescente de efeito: semana gestacional, história gestacional, paridade, tabagismo, nível de escolaridade, idade da mãe e consulta pré-natal.
