Resumo: The present work analyzes a relatively new field of behavior therapy: the control of excessive stress. The stress response, in its multiple physical and emotional aspects, is described in terms of Cannon 's concept of preparation for "fight or flight" and in terms of Hans Selye 's general adilptation syndrom. Its 3 stages' alarm, resistence and exaustion, are analysed, together with their possible harmful effects. A treatment plan, used by the author, is presented. The plan's objective is to teach the client stress management, skills in a short period of time. The several phases of the treatment are described.

A resposta de stress, em seus componentes somáticos e emocionais, é descrita em termos dos conceitos de preparo para "a luta ou a fuga" desenvolvido por Cannon e da "síndrome geral de adaptação", identificada por Hans Selye. Os três estágios desta síndrome: alarme, resistência e exaustão, e suas possíveis consequências, são analisadas. Um plano de tratamento que a autora vem utilizando há algum tempo é apresentado. Este plano visa a ensinar ao cliente a lidar com o stress excessivo em um período de tempo limitado.
