MAPPING OF AREAS VULNERABLE TO MASS MOVEMENTS IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF JABOATÃO DOS GUARARAPES, PERNAMBUCO

In some Brazilian cities, urban expansion evolved in an accelerated and unplanned way, leading to the occupation of areas unsuitable for housing, such as steep slopes and soils with little stability. The reflection of this process, added to the adverse weather conditions, potentiate the occurrence of mass movements, causing human, property and environmental damage. Faced with this problem, the present study sought to map the areas of susceptibility to this type of disaster in the municipality of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Pernambuco, using one of the Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods, the Hierarchical Analytical Process (AHP), in conjunction with the Geographic Information System (GIS). For this, seven conditioning factors for the occurrence of mass movements were listed, which were manipu­lated in the QGIS software (v. 3.10.9), reclassified and submitted to map algebra. Thus, a map of susceptibility to mass movements was prepared for the region studied, and it was found that the regions most prone to this disaster are those with high slopes and altitudes, concave verti­cal curvatures, clayey soils and proximity to water bodies. The application of this methodology proved to be a viable alternative in terms of efficiency and applicability, becoming an alterna­tive for managers and professionals in the area to make more assertive decision-making.
