Resumo: This article aims to analyze the calls for the abolition of the indigenist policy emanating from the Royal Letter May 12th, 1798, and adopt a new approach in the prov- ince of Pará, between 1821 and 1832. Th e hypothesis developed is that discontent with this indigenist policy was higher in Rio Negro region, in which landlords and traders have had diffi culty getting indigenous workers in a satisfactory quantity through the mechanism estipulated by the Royal Letter. Th ey have resorted to illegal practices, like indigenous slavery and forced descimentos, and in order to institucionalize, they ques- tioned the indigenist policy then in force.

A hipótese desenvolvida é a de que o descontentamento com esta política indigenista foi mais pronunciado na região do Rio Negro, na medida em que proprietários de terra e negociantes tiveram muita dificuldade para obter braços indígenas em quantidades satisfatórias a partir dos mecanismos da carta régia supracitada.
