Resumo: This text aims to present the life and the trajectory of Luiza Mahin, black woman, mother, former slave and activist, a name still unknown to the general public, although there is research in various fi elds of knowledge that emphasize her actions. This name is closely linked to that of Luiz Gama (1830-1882), her son, to the slave uprisings and libertarian rebellions that took place in the 19th century in the city of Salvador-BA. We used as a methodological path the consultation of historiographical writings andliterary and academic sources that deal with themes related to the life and revolutionary performance of Luiza Mahin and the analysis of the autobiographical letter of Luiz Gamaand his poem Minha Mãe. These documents supported the construction of the figure of Luiza Mahin – mythical or not, because one can not attest to the veracity of her existence. In this text we highlight aspects of her personality, her African origins, her audacious trajectory as a former slave and an excellent activist and defender of the cause of theblack people, and the mythification processes based on the literature concerning the fact. Finally, her representation in Brazilian black feminism.
