The subject of this article is situated at the height of the Cold War. It presents the results of research on the Cuban revolution and the Catholic Church in the fi rst two years of the revolutionary government (1959 – 1960). Th e religious institution competed with other political sectors for infl uence in the new regime installed. Before entering this central theme, the text presents a brief historical retreat to the colonial and republican period. Th is is necessary due to the uniqueness of the Catholic Church on the Caribbean island. Th e diffi culties that the religious hierarchy encountered in being admitted as a relevant interlocutor aft er the victory was not due to the new political moment in these two ana- lyzed years, but to the fact that a foreign institution was created during the colonial period.
