The present text deals with the political uses that the conversion of indigenous groups aroused on the Amazon frontier. The border that we allude to here concerns the Marañon, Solimões and Negro rivers, where the limits of European colonialism met. If, on the one hand, there was a spiritual character, in reducing the indigenous to the Catholic faith, on the other hand, conversions were widely used by the Iberian states to guarantee their zone of influence, in addition to guaranteeing economic supremacy in the Amazon valley. And in addition to the Iberians, conversion was a policy in which the indigenous people took advantage of their status as “the king's vassal”, which the fact of becoming Catholic expressed. In this way, the present work dialogues with border studies, above all, with the notion of Mission as a border institution, in addition to the indigenous protagonism, in seeking to demonstrate the perspective of native groups, facing the conversion process.
