Dissertação (Mestrado) -  Programa de Pós-graduação em Ciências da Religião, Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais, Belo HorizonteThis research started from the statement that women can perform duties in the captaincy, like, playing, singing and dancing, in addition to the functions assigned to them as queens, princesses and cooks on the Crowned throne in instantiates the Reign. It is called Reinado, the experience within the Congado considered Catholic religious expression, typical of black people, where groups of people sing and dance in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary and their saints of devotion. This research had as focus of analysis the Congo Guard of the Holy Spirit of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pinhões community, Minas Gerais, Brazil. This community has annually the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and the feast of the Holy Spirit.The Honor Guard Catopês, formed by men, traditional community, is responsible for the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. The Divine Congo Guard, founded in 2013, formed by women, is responsible for the Divine Holy Ghost feast. We are witnessing the opening of a reign. In this sense, the research mobilizing question was: for what reasons Pinhões women opened their reign? The primary objective of the research was to analyze those reasons. For this, it was made an ethnographic research in which one sought to interview six women and a man engaging prominent roles in the Guard. The authors that supported this research were Pierre Bourdieu (1989, 1999, 2010), Ivone Gebara (1991, 2000a, 2000b), João Libânio (2000, 20004, 2011), Roberto da Matta (1986, 1990, 2013) and Arnold Van Gennep (2013). This theoretical framework allowed to reflect about the inclusion of women in areas previously reserved for men and showed the reasons why these women opened their reign. The dissertation is divided into five chapters: Introduction; Pinhões Reinado Opening of Divine Congo; Theoretical elements of the party and the rite in Pinhões: Between faith and power women open up a Reign; Final considerations.
