DEMANDS AND DIFFICULTIES RELATED TO RELIGIOSITY/SPIRITUALITY IN ONCOLOGY NURSING CARE

Resumo: The study investigates the demands, assistance, and difficulties related to religiosity/spirituality (R/S) in oncology nursing care. Twelve nurses from the clinical and surgical oncology sector of a general hospital in the interior of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, were interviewed in person. The interviews were transcribed. The analytic corpus was submitted to content analysis and interpreted by the literature in the area. Nurses recognize patients' religious demands. The assistance provided involves words of comfort, prayer, and making oneself available to the patient. Also, they offer the institution's spiritual support group. They report difficulties with patients with religious restrictions for a specific type of care. Participants recommend the R/S approach at graduation. No specificities were found regarding the management of R/S in the context of cancer care, favoring the interpretation that this dimension can be institutionally integrated, which does not exclude the need for constant investment in training and improvement for care that includes this vertex.

Doce enfermeros del sector de oncología clínica y quirúrgica de un hospital general del interior del Estado de São Paulo, Brasil, fueron entrevistados personalmente. Las entrevistas fueron transcritas en su totalidad y el corpus fue sometido a análisis de contenido y posteriormente interpretado por la literatura del área. Las enfermeras reconocen las demandas religiosas de los pacientes. La asistencia brindada involucra palabras de consuelo, oración y puesta a disposición del paciente, además de ofrecer el grupo de apoyo espiritual propio de la institución. También reportan dificultades con pacientes que tienen restricciones religiosas para ciertos cuidados. Los participantes recomiendan el enfoque R/E en la graduación. No se encontraron especificidades en cuanto al manejo de la R/E en el contexto de la atención del cáncer, favoreciendo la interpretación de que esa dimensión puede ser integrada institucionalmente, lo que no excluye la necesidad de constante inversión en capacitación y perfeccionamiento para la atención que incluye este vértice.O estudo visa investigar as demandas, a assistência e as dificuldades relacionadas à religiosidade/espiritualidade (R/E) no cuidado em enfermagem oncológica. Foram entrevistados, presencialmente, 12 enfermeiros do setor de oncologia clínica e cirúrgica de um hospital geral do interior do Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. As entrevistas foram transcritas na integra e o corpus foi submetido à análise de conteúdo e posteriormente interpretado pela literatura da área. Os enfermeiros reconhecem as demandas religiosas dos pacientes. A assistência prestada envolve palavras de conforto, oração e se colocar disponível ao paciente, além da oferta do grupo de apoio espiritual da própria instituição. Também, relatam dificuldades com pacientes que possuem restrições religiosas para determinados cuidados. Os participantes recomendam a abordagem da R/E na graduação.
