Resumo: More than 150 years after the codification of the Spiritist doctrine, the debates among its faithful about the religious aspect of Spiritism are still frequent. The doctrine, codified by Allan Kardec in the 19th century, came amid a profusion of new scientific and philosophical theories and conceptions, having been strongly marked by the enlightened legacy and thinkers of his day. The purpose of this article is to establish a dialogue between the concept of Kardec about religion and some authors, such as Benson Saler, Clifford Geertz, among others. For this, in a first moment, we will discuss the origins of the term "religion" and its concept. We will try to understand, through a bibliographical research, the reason why Kardec affirmed that Spiritism was not a religion, as well as investigate its secular perspective. We will conclude, finally, how Kardec placed Spiritism in terms of Religion.

We will try to understand, through a bibliographical research, the reason why Kardec affirmed that Spiritism was not a religion, as well as investigate its secular perspective. We will conclude, finally, how Kardec placed Spiritism in terms of Religion. Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais2019-06-30info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttp://periodicos.pucminas.br/index.php/interacoes/article/view/1821410.5752/P.1983-2478.2019v14n25p227-247INTERAÇÕES; Vol 14 No 25 (2019): Pentecostalism and politics; 227-247INTERAÇÕES; Vol. 14 Núm. 25 (2019): Pentecostalismo e política; 227-247INTERAÇÕES; v. 14 n. 25 (2019): Pentecostalismo e política; 227-2471983-2478reponame:Interações (Uberlândia.
